Why Receding Gums Keep Getting Worse — No Matter What You Try

Dentists Call It "Poor Brushing," But a Medical Researcher Says the Real Cause Is Often Overlooked

If you've ever brushed carefully, flossed every night, and done everything you were told — only to notice your gums pulling back further — you're not alone.

For millions of older adults, receding gums, bleeding, and sensitivity slowly become part of daily life.

Dentists often reassure patients it's "normal" or prescribe the familiar advice: brush softer, use sensitive toothpaste and prescription mouthwash.

And yet, for many people, the gums keep pulling back.

That's the frustrating part.

According to John Berman, a medical researcher with more than two decades in oral health — and whose work has been featured on Fox News and NBC — there's a simple reason why.

And it has nothing to do with brushing technique, flossing habits, or aging.

The Problem With How Gum Recession Is Treated Today

Most approaches to receding gums and sensitivity are based on the assumption that bacteria is the primary cause.

But Berman disagrees.

He explains that many people are overlooking a stubborn fungal growth called "mouth mold" that coats the teeth, gums, and tongue from the inside out.

According to researchers at Harvard, standard brushing, flossing, and mouthwash aren't designed to remove it — and may actually make the environment more hospitable for it.

"So people blame themselves," Berman explains.

"They think they didn't try hard enough — when in reality, some of what they're doing may be feeding the very problem they're trying to fix."

According to Berman, mouth mold quietly worsens gum recession, sensitivity, and decay — especially as we age. Yet most dentists never test for it.

"I Didn't Realize How Much I Was Hiding"

Linda, 54 — "I used to cover my mouth in every single photo."

Many adults watch their gums pull back slowly over years and assume there's nothing they can do.

They start covering their mouths. They wince through every sip of cold water. They dread every dental appointment because the numbers are always worse.

Then they watch Berman's interview — and realize the one thing they never addressed may have been the problem all along.

Berman recently sat down for a short interview walking through what he found, how to tell if mouth mold may be affecting your gums, and how to address it at home in less than a minute a day.

"My dentist asked what I'd been doing differently," Linda shared. "I stopped covering my mouth when I laugh. I forgot I even used to do that."

The interview has been quietly shared among people struggling with receding gums and dental issues, but it hasn't been widely promoted.

Berman says his goal is simple: help people understand what their mouth is actually dealing with — and support healthy gums and teeth without depending on endless dental visits or invasive procedures.

If you or someone you love has been struggling with dental problems that won't go away, this is worth seeing.
